A family outing to a ballet or opera at the Mariinsky Theatre can be quite steep, especially for non-Russian citizens. Premium seats for Swan Lake, which is running in January 2017 at the Mariinsky Theatre, cost up to 8,000 roubles.
Luckily, there are ways to find cheaper tickets—the trick is knowing where and when to look, and in some cases being prepared to compromise on the seats, date or time you visit.

Each month you can find information about a discount programme offered through the official Facebook group of the theatre. When you see an update, you can buy a subscription here that provides a 50% discount off tickets to ballet or opera performances. Once you have submitted your request for a subscription, you need to buy your tickets at the theatre box office within the next two days.

On the day of the performance, students and pensioners can buy tickets with a 50% discount. Go to the box office and show your student or pension card. Discount does not apply for guest performances.

Between 1pm and 2pm, tickets for repertory performances at the Alexandrinsky Theatre are sold at a 10% discount at the box office. The discount applies to tickets starting from 300 roubles. In addition, schoolchildren and students can buy tickets with a discount of 50% one hour before the performance. As always, bring along a valid student card.

Capella offers 30% discount for tickets after you spend more than 400 roubles. These tickets must be purchased at the box office from noon to 1pm. Students with a valid student card are granted the 30% discount for the entire repertoire, regardless of the price.

This season you can visit some concerts in the St Petersburg Philharmonia completely free. The Great Hall continues a series of concerts in the foyer where you can hear little-known works of chamber music. Concerts are held once a month on weekends.
To enter the free concerts, it works like a buy one get one free deal. You need to provide an already purchased ticket to any concert from the Great Hall of the Philharmonia in the current month and make a reservation here.
St Petersburg International Festival presents All Together Opera

On the World Theatre Day, which is celebrated on March 27, tickets for performances at St Petersburg’s best theatres are sold up to a 90% discount. E-tickets can be purchased on websites of participating theatres. Campaign usually starts on 27 March at midnight and last for 24 hours.
On 27 May, when St Petersburg’s city day takes place and there is a possibility to get free tickets for some theatre performances or for only 10 roubles. The only condition is to be quick in buying tickets as they sell out quickly online. Sale usually starts two days before the festival day and websites will be created as the date gets closer.
