This week St Petersburg will be hosting many events free of charge, from the Festival of Lights, free movies, exhibitions and the Diwali Indian Festival, with music dances and free meditation classes. See our picks of the week!

Event: Exhibition 150 Embroidered People
About: The industrial designer and artist Sasha Braulova will present an exposition of 150 mails sent from all over the world. The mails feature minutiously portraits of 150 people. The number represents the natural limit of social bonds that humans can have, and the number of the people that influence us the most in life.

Event: The Circus by Charlie Chaplin
About:  On Friday evening LenDok will screen one of the masterpieces of the silent cinema: The Circus. The screening will be accompanied by the Russian pianist and composer Alexei Orelovicha.

Event: Festival of Lights
About: This year the Festival of Lights will take place in two different locations. Starting from St Isaac’s Square the festival will move to Mariinsky Theatre where the show of lights and multimedia 3D mapping show will play with the architecture of the buildings.

Event: Concert Therr Maitz
About: The Russian band composed by the singers Anton Belyaev and Viktoriya Zhuk and the musicians Nikolay Sarabyanov, Artyom Til’dikov and Boris Ionov will perform this weekend at club A2. The band was on the first place on Russian iTunes last year and the winner of the national prize Event of the Year.

Event: Art Night
About: The first weekend of November will be dedicated to the event Art Night that will take place in more than 70 regions in Russia. More than 1,000 events  will be organised in various museums, theatres and libraries, 6 of which in St Petersburg. Event: Diwali Indian Festival
About: Organised by the St Petersburg-based group of Sahaja Yogis, the Diwali Indian festival will feature a concert with Indian songs and dances, classes of meditation and mehendi, the Indian art of decorating hands with henna.

Event: Concert Akira Yamaoka
About: Mostly known for the Silent Hill series, Shadows of the Damned, among many others. The video game composer and sound designer Akira Yamaoka will perform on Saturday in St Petersburg, as part of a tour that will see him performing in many cities in Eastern Europe.

Event: Movie The Courageous Heart
About:  The 2009 movie by Irena Sendler is the story about the fight against Nazism and the role played by women in it. The screening of the movie is organised by the Russian feminist group LeftFem.
