With the US election coming to a close, here are 6 things from Russian politicians that are funny, unexpected and clever

The United States and Russia have always had a tricky relationship. While Russians may sometimes be portrayed by the media to say really stupid things, here are six funny, clever or really unexpected quotes that have been said about the 58th US Presidential Election.

1. You show me yours, I’ll show you mine

Sergey Mironov, leader of A Just Russia, one of the four parties in the Russian parliament, told RIA Novosti: “if they don’t let us [observe their elections], then they have no business at our elections.”

2. Captain Obvious

Sometimes journalists are pesky for political pull quotes. When this happens, you hear politicians rattle off a long-winded nothingness.

“You see the Kremlin has its own agenda. We are dealing with it closely, this is the main thing, … Certainly the US presidential elections are an important event that we are tracking along with other international events,” Russian diplomat Dmitry Peskov said.

3. Please listen to this guy

Trump’s unpredictability has been the buzz of this presidential election season. Just when you think he’s said it all, in comes another dash of crazy.

“If Trump wins, it’s an equation where everything is unknown. There, x times y equals z,” said Konstantin Kosachev who is the head of the Russian senate’s foreign affairs committee.

Another politician, who was quoted anonymously, said that Trump’s presidency “sounds very attractive but it could end as a catastrophe for everyone. He is unpredictable.”

4. He nasty

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took it further than Donald Trump with another catty quote when he was asked about Trump’s 2005 “grab ‘em by the pussy” gaffe.

“English is not my mother tongue, I don’t know that I would sound decent: There are so many pussies around your presidential campaign on both sides, that I prefer not to comment about this,” Lavrov told CNN’S Christiane Amanpour deadpan.

Nasty.

5. Seriously?

Vote Trump or face war. This was the message from ultra-nationalist lawmaker Vladimir Zhirinovsky as he endorses the Republican Trump as the next US president.

Zhirinovsky told Reuters, “Americans voting for a president on 8 November must realise that they are voting for peace on Planet Earth if they vote for Trump. But if they vote for Hillary it’s war. It will be a short movie. There will be Hiroshimas and Nagasakis everywhere.”

6. That was… unexpected

Make America Great Again, we hope. Franz Klintsevich, who is the first deputy chairman of the Committee on Defense and Security at the Federation Council, banks on Trump to drop his phony facade and man up when he’s the Commander-in-Chief.

“Nobody has ever met a US billionaire who fell outside the systems’s framework. In case of victory he will take off the clown’s mask and will face the honorable public in politically civilized dress,” said Klintsevich

Maybe there is some value in naivete and wishful thinking.
